CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES The OVQG has an ongoing commitment to projects that benefit the community. The guild makes a few charity quilts each year for the benefit of charitable organizations in our community. Community organizations apply to the guild to be the recipients of one of these quilts that are then raffled by their organization to raise funds. Quilt tops come from several sources, including: blocks made by members and donations from our UFO program. OVQG members who would like to contribute, see our Charity Quilt Assembly co-ordinator. Conditions for application for a charity quilt Applicant organizations must be a registered charity (please show us your registered charity number), and have no political or religious affiliations. Please send completed application to the VP-Program. Many OVQG members participate in our ongoing program of providing baby quilts for the premature babies at the Rich Little Special Care Nursery, Ottawa Civic Hospital. This is the special care nursery at the Civic Hospital. These quilts are used for protecting the tiny babies from the lights and noise of the nursery. The babies take the quilts with them when they finally go home. OVQG Members may speak with the baby quilt co-ordinator to find out more and to obtain ideas and patterns. There are also often bags of scraps available to use in making little quilts.Requirements for a Baby Quilt for the Special Care Nursery: Baby Quilt Requirements: Size: 24” x 24” (give or take an inch) Top Fabric: 100% cotton in colours or prints suitable for babies; Back Fabric: 100% cotton flannelette; NOTE: no polyester on the exterior as it can cause a static reaction; Batting: any batting is acceptable; Quilting: by hand or machine, but do not quilt too densely to keep the project light and flexible. Do NOT use invisible thread, it can loop and catch tiny fingers or toes; Binding: Can be standard binding or envelope/pillowcase style; Label: Attach a label displaying OVQG, or write OVQG directly on the backing fabric with a permanent fabric pen. The quilts brought to guild meetings each month are displayed for everyone to admire. Thank you notes / pictures are put up on our bulletin board. If you have any questions, please see the baby quilt coordinator. |
