This introductory workshop covers a unique method of manipulating fabric that combines "sculpting" and "painting" with fibres that employs the use of transparency, to teach students how to create effective portraits with cheesecloth/gauze.
Included is a brief overview of how photographs may be adjusted on a computer, tablet or photocopier. Working from a simple photo that Mary provides, you will explore the various options for using this technique, learning all the skills required to create stunning portraits out of simple cheesecloth. The class covers sculpting, machine appliqué, and possible methods of finishing and mounting.
Students who bring a machine to class can complete the portrait; others can have the portrait ready to complete quickly at home and can experiment with sculpting other shapes in the afternoon.
