    Quilting Basics - Piecing

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into quilting, but didn’t know where to start, this is the place!

We are pleased to offer the first of a series of shorter Workshops for complete Novices or Beginners.  You will learn Piecing, i.e. the construction of some basic units used in quilt designs.

Participants will make samples of the following block elements:  half-square triangles (HSTs), quarter-square triangles (QST), 4-patches, and flying geese.  If time permits, we will cover V-block, and square-in-a-square.   Emphasis will include the importance of seams, ¼” and the scant ¼”.

Many thanks to Billie Stephens who will be our Instructor for Piecing.

    Supplies List:

Quilting Basics - Foundation Paper Piecing:

    A Beginners' Introduction

You will learn the basics of sewing fabric and paper together to create interesting shapes and designs. The technique is ideal to join long narrow shapes and tiny pieces. You will make a 9" x 9" project, which you can finish later as a mug rug, placemat, wall-hanging, or cushion.  If you always wanted to try this technique, and were nervous, here's a great small project to start with!

Everyone will have a separate 6’ table.  Masks are not mandatory but health officials are still recommending we use them to stay safe.  It’s your choice but please respect other people’s decisions.

And now for something completely different.... from piecing blocks, that is.  Have you ever wanted to just cut something freehand and play with designs, like we did as children?  Join us to do just that, as we make a portrait of someone familiar or of no one you've ever met.  Find inspiration in the work of Freddy Moran and  Jean Impey or search the Internet for "faces in fabric".

The workshop will be led by Jeanie Vanderzon.  There are no patterns and no rules.  Fusing techniques will be covered for those who need instruction and Steam a seam lite is available for sale at $ 6.00/yd by 12" wide  .  Dig into your scrap bins and bring an assortment of colours to create your whimsical portrait.

Everyone will have a separate 6' table.  Masks are not mandatory but the health officials are still recommending we use them to stay safe.  It's your choice but please respect other people's decisions.
