In this five-day workshop, the focus will be on ways to inspire you and jump start your creativity so you can produce original works of art in the quilt medium (even if you think you are not creative!). We will talk about ways and places to find inspiration and how to keep yourself inspired. There will be a presentation on composition, design and colour, with discussion to follow. Learning about design is really important to the visual success of your work. You will be introduced to three methods for designing original art quilts:

    1) “seat of the pants” design;

    2) planned design (creating a pattern); and

    3) piecing a design with free-form piecing.

You will have the opportunity to complete a small work using each method. Throughout the class the instructor will share her own process for making an original art quilt from beginning to end. Techniques for constructing your quilt, and methods of finishing will be covered.

    Day 1:
    Creativity, Inspiration, Composition and Design.
Using a Sketchbook and a Viewfinder

    Day 2:
    Seat of the Pants Design

    Day 3:
    Planned Design (Creating a Pattern)

    Day 4:
    Free-Form Piecing
Definitely bring your sewing machine for this class!

    Day 5:

Finishing the Quilt and Sharing it with the World

In our last class we will talk about border options (to border or not to border?), whether or not to frame your work, various options for bindings, facings, and edging, as well as how to label and hang your work of art. We will also explore the options that exist for exhibiting your work, should you choose to do that now or down the road.

This workshop is for the student who is familiar with the needle-turn method of hand appliqué, and is ready to take on some new challenges.

Part 1 will cover: different ways of making stems, reverse appliqué, appliqué off-the-block and back-basting (2 methods).  Back-basting is a template-free technique that will eliminate the need for constantly slipping fabric pieces under a plastic overlay. This technique makes it so much easier to manage your project.

In Part 2, students will prepare to assemble a block either by using the traditional techniques (plastic underlay and templates) or by back-basting.

Pattern is included in the workshop fee. Please pick up the pattern at the next Guild meeting.

Some advance preparation is essential. Please review the pattern and the supply list.

Learn hand appliqué, using the needle-turn technique, and make a Mexican Rose block.

From this, you can make a pillow (2 versions will be demonstrated), a table runner, a wall quilt, or even a full bed quilt should you be so inspired.

In the morning session, you will learn how to hand appliqué simple shapes and make stems and circles.  In the afternoon session you will assemble and start to appliqué one Mexican Rose block.

    Some advance preparation is required.

Have fun creating a one of a kind piece of art. Spend the day learning design concepts related to composition and colour.

Start with one, two or more fabrics and each hour receive a set of instructions - 5 sets in all to complete this little art project. For example instruction #1 will be to create a background using two or more of your fabrics, instruction #2 will be designed to add to the background with each following instruction building on the previous hour's results.

See how many different techniques can be incorporated into the piece using all kinds of media. Multiple techniques will be discussed, demonstrated and used such as creating texture with Texture Magic, curved piecing and couching to name a few.

This little project is a tonne of fun and gets those creative juices flowing.

    For all levels of quilters.
